A Message from Prof. Dr. Abdul Karim Saeed Pasha Sahib, Ameer and President of the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha'at-e-Islam Lahore [Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement for the Propagation of Islam] on the 'Hundredth Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Hazrat Sahibzada Abdul Latif Shaheed' (14th July 2003):

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

 MESSAGE OF HAZRAT AMEER

ON THE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MARTYRDOM OF SAHIBZADA HAZRAT ABDUL LATIF SHAHEED

"And speak not of those who are slain in Allah’s way as dead. Nay, (they are) alive, but you perceive not." (The Holy Quran: 2:154).

Sahibzada Hazrat Abdul Latif, the most eminent of the Ulama of Afghanistan, and one of the most devoted disciples of Hazrat Masih-i-Mauood [The Promised Messiah Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Sahib of Qadian], offered the ultimate sacrifice and embraced shahaadat (martyrdom) in the way of Allah a hundred years ago on 14th July 1903. He was stoned to death by order of the Afghanistan authorities for the "crime" of belonging to the Ahmadiyya Movement. The status and rank of Hazrat Sahibzada Shaheed (Martyr) and the event of his martyrdom, with its painful but faith-enhancing example, do not stand in need of any introduction. This great martyrdom is a glowing example of patience and steadfastness in the path of faith and true belief. Hazrat Masih-i-Mauood expressed his deep grief on this event in the following words:

"What cruelty! .... The martyrdom, which was ordained for Sahibzada Abdul Latif, has occurred, but the recompense of the tyrant remains.... O Abdul Latif, thousands of blessings be upon you that you showed an example of your truthfulness in my life, and about those who will stay in my Jama’at [Movement] after my death, I know not what they will do." [Tazkira-tush-Shahadatain, pp. 56-58.]

Perhaps never before has there been a greater need than now to dispel the darkness surrounding us by the light of this example.

The Central Anjuman is holding a one-day national convention on Sunday, 13th July 2003, to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of this memorable event. We will also utilise this occasion to recall the sacrifices of some other Ahmadis who laid down their lives in the way of Allah and national defence.

Let us pray that Allah Ta'ala [Allah Almighty] may infuse in us the spirit of sacrifice to hold religion above all worldly considerations as so bravely exemplified by Hazrat Sahibzada Abdul Latif Shaheed. Aameen.

I request all our overseas Jamaats [branches] to also hold meetings and conventions during the current year in memory of the great martyr.

I will end with a few verses from a Persian ode that Hazrat Masih-i-Mauood wrote at the martyrdom of Sahibzada Sahib. The words of the Founder will certainly strengthen our faith.

Concealed behind such a death are hundreds of lives
If you want life, put the bowl of death to your lips

Keep the example before you of this pure person, Abdul Latif
How did he destroy himself for truth?

It’s the way and manner of fidelity and faithfulness to God
It’s the customary pinnacle of sincerity

To keep truth alive, they kill themselves
In the path of Allah, they sacrifice themselves

Religion is sowing the seed of annihilation and stepping out of this world
Dying for religion is the name of life.

Please continue praying for the progress and success of the Jama'at.
