The Programme in English:
Preface:
In recent years, the migration
of non-westerners has led to a blend of different cultures
and religions. Western society has come to know the rest of
the world. All these cultures and religions have been
introduced into Western society, particularly in Europe and
the United States of America.
This rapid growth of an amalgam of
cultures and religions has led to much confusion; culture
and religion are often mixed up. This has clouded one’s
judgement on religion and its followers.
The Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha’at
Islam (Lahore) Nederland would like to interact with Muslim
brothers and sisters on how to deal with Islam in Western
society. For this purpose the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha’at
Islam (Lahore) Nederland organises an international
convention on the occasion of its
25th
anniversary.
The goal of this convention is to
achieve a better understanding between Muslims and Western
society as well as integration of Muslims in Western
society. In addition, it is our aim to start a meaningful
dialogue with policy makers and the media in six sessions of
speeches and discussions.
The conference will be addressed by
individuals living in The Netherlands and abroad on
different topics followed by discussions on these
topics.
The theme "Islam in
the Western Society" will be discussed on the following
topics:
1. Islam in the
multicultural society:
Islam is a world religion.
This means that it appears in a multicultural society. The
role of Islam to its followers is an important one. In
societies where Muslims are a minority, then much time is
needed to attain understanding from the majority. Suriname
is an example of a country where there is already much more
achieved for the Muslim society compared to the Netherlands,
for instance the Eid festivals are accepted as national
holidays. In The Netherlands the majority of Muslims are
immigrants. Looking at the numerous possibilities to
establish Islamic schools, build mosques, create reserved
places on the cemeteries for Muslims, etc., we are making
progress.
There is still much work to be done:
we need to create a better understanding for those who
participate in fasting during the Ramadan; the possibility
should be arranged to receive some leave time or
compensatory time off to attend the Jumah salaat; the
wearing of the head covering (hidjaab) at the workplace. How
can we help Muslims with their daily religious practices?
The mosque is not only a religious centre but also a social
one.
2. Religion and
culture:
There are some differences in
the way Islam is being practised by different communities,
such as the Surinamese, Turkish, Moroccan, Pakistani and
African communities. Cultural influences play an important
role in the practice of religion. A few questions need to be
answered are: what exactly can be defined as shariah and
what can be labelled as culture and tradition? To what
extent do non-Muslims and Muslims mix culture and tradition
with their perception of Islam?
3. Islam -- a
tolerant religion:
Islam preaches peace and
tolerance as well as a society where Muslims and non-Muslims
can live in peace with each other. How then Muslims got the
negative image of being orthodox and violent? What exactly
is Jihad? Where and when has Jihad been practised? What is
the correct interpretation of Jihad? Is the tax system,
welfare and health care system of western society a result
of the Sidka Fitr and Zakaat? How can we handle Islam and
its rules and regulations and the image of Islam that has
occurred?
4. Islam practised
by youth:
There is definitely a
generation gap. The youth often feels it is being
misunderstood by their parents, because they live in two
worlds. Due to lack of knowledge combined with uncertainty,
parents maintain and protect "their religion" against
different views. Many youngsters experience integration as
loss of their identity. Here lies a task for us. How can we
protect ourselves from negative influences regarding Islamic
rules, such as the rules for fasting, Halal food, marriage
and prohibitions of alcohol, smoking and drugs?
5. Women in
Islam:
What do the Holy Quran and the
Hadiths say about the role of women? It is high time that
Western society as well as Muslim brothers and sisters
acknowledge the equality of Muslim women to men. We need to
get rid of the myth that woman’s tasks on earth is
restricted to pleasing her husband, taking care of the
children and doing all household chores.
6. The essence of
life: a summary:
An attempt will be made to
explain the meaning of life on earth, for Muslims in
particular.
Life on earth is temporary; it is a
preparation for the Hereafter, the eternal life.
Every good deed will be rewarded. To
live in harmony in a multicultural environment is the force
of Islam.

The Programme in Dutch:
Voorwoord:
In de afgelopen jaren is onder
andere door de migratie van niet-westerlingen de afstand
tussen Oost en West en tussen Noord en Zuid verkleind.
Westerse samenlevingen hebben kennis kunnen maken met de
rest van de wereld; andere culturen en levensbeschouwingen
zijn geïntroduceerd in Europa en Amerika.
De snelheid waarmee dit gepaard is
gegaan, heeft ertoe geleid dat geen van de betrokken
partijen rustig aan elkaar heeft kunnen wennen. Politiek,
Cultuur en Religie worden dikwijls door elkaar gehaald. Mede
hierdoor is het beeld van en kijk op elkaar bepaald en ook
vertroebeld.
Wij van de Ahmadiyya Anjuman
Isha’at Islam (Lahore) Nederland willen graag onze
maatschappelijke plicht oppakken om iets aan dit beeld te
doen en tegelijkertijd in gesprek te raken met onze
Moslimbroeders en -zusters over het omgaan met de eigen
religie in de westerse samenleving.
Ter gelegenheid van het 5e
Lustrum van de Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha’at Islam (Lahore)
Nederland organiseren wij een internationale conferentie. Op
deze conferentie willen we een licht werpen op de interactie
tussen de Islam en de nieuwe omgeving.
Met het conferentiethema willen wij
bevorderen dat moslims een harmonieuze aansluiting kunnen
maken met de westerse wereld. Tegelijkertijd willen wij een
constructief dialoog starten met onze omgeving en met name
beleidsmakers en beeldvormers.
Aan de conferentie zullen sprekers uit
Nederland en uit het buitenland deelnemen, zodat de
problematiek zowel uit het mondiale als uit het Nederlandse
perspectief besproken kan worden.
Naast zes sessies met lezingen en
discussies, is er een onderdeel waarbij een dialoog
opgestart wordt met beleidsmakers en
beeldvormers.
Het thema DE ISLAM
IN DE WESTERSE SAMENLEVING zal worden belicht aan de hand
van lezingen over de volgende zes
onderwerpen:
1. De Islam in een
multiculturele samenleving:
De Islam is een
wereldgodsdienst. Dit betekent ook dat het voorkomt in een
multiculturele samenleving. De positie die de Islam in die
samenleving inneemt is van belang voor de belijders. Is er
sprake van een minderheid, dan zal er veel meer energie
aangewend moeten worden om begrip te kweken bij de anders
denkenden, dan wanneer er sprake is van gelijkwaardigheid.
In Suriname bijvoorbeeld is er reeds veel meer
geïnstitutionaliseerd dan in Nederland. Eid Ul Fitre is
een nationale vrije dag. In Nederland zijn het vooral de
allochtonen die de Islam als geloof belijden. Ook in dit
opzicht zijn wij een minderheid met alle daar aan gekoppelde
nadelen. We zijn hier echter op de goede weg: de vrijheden
die wij genieten op het gebied van het stichten van
Islamitische scholen, bouwen van moskeeën, speciale
ruimte op de begraafplaats, etc.
Er moet echter nog veel meer gebeuren,
bijvoorbeeld: begrip voor hen die vasten tijdens de Ramadan;
vrijaf voor het vrijdagsgebed desnoods tegen inlevering van
een ½ ADV/ATV en het (zonder consequenties) kunnen
dragen van de hoofddoek.
De vraag is ook hoe Moslims omgaan met
hun religie in deze samenleving en wat wij hen over dit
onderwerp kunnen aanreiken. De moskee houdt zich niet alleen
met de religie bezig, maar is ook op sociaal gebied
actief.
2. Religie en
cultuur:
Er bestaat nogal wat verschil
in de wijze van beleven van de Islam tussen de diverse
bevolkingsgroepen. Deze verschillen zijn er zelfs binnen de
Surinaamse moslimgemeenschap maar ook nog tussen andere
volkeren, zoals Turken, Marokkanen, Pakistani en Afrikanen.
Veelal spelen cultuurinvloeden een belangrijke rol. Welke
zijn dat? En hoe kunnen wij dat duiden? Wat is onderdeel van
de geloofsleer en wat zijn cultuurelementen? Welke invloed
hebben deze cultuurelementen op wat anderen denken dat de
Islam is?
3. Islam, een
tolerante godsdienst:
De Islam predikt vrede en
tolerantie, een samenleven van de moslim met de
niet-moslim.Hoe is dan het beeld ontstaan dat moslims
orthodox (fundamentalistisch) en gewelddadig zijn?. Wat is
Jihad eigenlijk?. Wanneer en waarom was dit ingesteld? Welke
betekenis geeft de oprechte moslim aan Jihad? Is het
belastingstelsel en het sociale stelsel van de westerse
maatschappij een uitvloeisel van Sidka Fitr en Zakaat
(armenbelasting)?. De Zakaat is één van de
pijlers van de Islam. Hoe gaan wij om met wat de Islam is en
voorschrijft en het beeld dat er in de loop van de tijd over
de Islam is ontstaan?
4. De beleving van
de Islam door onze jeugd:
Bij menigeen is er sprake van
een generatiekloof. De jeugd voelt zich niet begrepen door
de ouderen, omdat ze in twee werelden leven. Ouders weten
niet beter en proberen angstvallig hun religie te beschermen
door iedere andersdenkende als een afvallige af te
schilderen. Integratie in deze samenleving wordt door velen
ervaren als een verlies van de eigen identiteit. Hier ligt
een grote opdracht voor ons allen. Hoe gaan wij om met alle
invloeden waarmee we dagelijks worden geconfronteerd,
bijvoorbeeld ten aanzien van vasten, halal eten, huwelijk,
drugs, roken, alcohol, etc.
5. De vrouw binnen
de Islam:
Het is belangrijk duidelijk te
maken wat de Heilige Koran en de Hadiths hierover zeggen.
Het wordt tijd dat de westerse samenleving en helaas ook
andere Moslimbroeders en -zusters beseffen dat de vrouw een
volwaardige plaats inneemt in de samenleving. We moeten af
van de mythe dat de vrouw alleen maar haar man moet behagen,
voor het eten moet zorgen en de kinderen moet
opvoeden.
6. De essentie van
het Moslim zijn:
Getracht zal worden om
samenvattend aan te geven wat de zin is van het leven hier
op aarde in het algemeen en de zin van het Moslim-zijn in
het bijzonder. Het leven hier is van voorbijgaande aard: een
voorbereiding op het hiernamaals, het eeuwige leven. Alle
goede daden zullen daar beloond worden. In harmonie leven
met je omgeving, in een multiculturele samenleving,
aangepast aan de tijd en omgeving is de kracht van de Islam.
Dit wordt ook benadrukt in de andere lezingen.
