1. Introduction:

"I bear witness that there is no deity but God, the one, no partner has he, and I bear witness that Muhammad is his servant and messenger. Furthermore, I seek the protection of God from the accursed Satan."

"And we indeed gave Moses the Book and We sent messengers after him one after another; and we gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear arguments and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. Is it then that whenever there came to you a messenger with what your souls desired not, you were arrogant? And some you gave the lie to and others you would slay." – (Holy Quran, 2:87).

In this section of the Quran, the reasons causing the Jews to reject the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), are mentioned. As the Jews are being addressed, therefore their condition is being described.

2. The Jews Desired the World:

The first point that caused the Israelites to turn away from the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) was that the desire for worldly things had become so predominant in them, and they had become such slaves to their desires, that nothing could move them from this, not even the command of God. Therefore God, Most High, has stated:-

"And we indeed gave Moses the Book and We sent messengers after him one after another; and we gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear arguments and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. Is it then that whenever there came to you a messenger with what your souls desired not, you were arrogant? And some you gave the lie to and others you would slay." (Holy Quran, 2:87).

3. The Holy Spirit Helps the Faithful:

"Strengthened him with the Holy Spirit": Unfortunately, it has become a common belief of Muslims that the Holy Spirit remained constantly with Jesus Christ only, and did not remain so with the other messengers. This is said to be one of the many distinctions that Jesus Christ possesses – in which no other human being shares. However, God, Most High, in the Quran states regarding our Holy Prophet’s (peace be upon him) Companions (rta) "wa idiham bi roohim-minhu" i.e., (he helped them with a spirit from himself – [Holy Quran, 58:22]) and from this it is apparent that help from the Holy Spirit is not only limited to prophets but is also provided to the faithful Muslims. It follows that the Holy Spirit is not vouchsafed for any one person and hence the Holy Prophet prayed for Hazrat Hasan bin Sabit "wa rooh al-qadus ma –aka" (the Holy Spirit be with you).

4. The Nature of Humankind – With Respect to the Coming of Prophets:

It is the way of the world, that if one hears something against ones interest, then one dislikes it. If a person’s moral fibre is weak, then he almost certainly will be too proud to accept the truth and will turn away from it. When a messenger comes – those who are engrossed in the love of this world cannot leave it, and they turn away from the pronouncements, which are against their desire. This, too, caused the Jews to deny the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him).

5. Veils on the Heart:

"And they say: Our hearts are covered. Nay, Allah has cursed them on account of their unbelief; so little it is that they believe." – (Holy Quran, 2:88). In spite of the fact, that the Jews, due to their servitude to their lower souls, would in arrogance reject anything not in accordance to their desires, they still believed that they were the only saved people – everybody else being destined for hell. So even if anything good was being said, they would not care about it, and out of their pride would say: "Our hearts are veiled and therefore no words can have any effect." God, Most High, has stated that this was not the real reason for their rejection. Their disobedience to divine governance and their following of their lower souls had caused them to be removed so far from God that their hearts were no longer capable of accepting divine truths. Little faith indeed was left in them.

6. The Scholars (Ulema) of Islam in the Footsteps of the Jews:

The Jews were, by and large, deprived of the blessings of Islam, due to their belief that they were the only saved people. And so that nation which once so rightly "Excelled all nations" (Quran 2.47), later "incurred (God’s) wrath" (Quran 2.61). Today the Muslims too suffer from this disease. They are totally engrossed in the world and have taken their lower desires for their God. They say that we are the only saved people and they do not care for anything truthful presented to them. So when Hazrat Mirza Sahib proclaimed his mission and published articles in the defence of Islam, not only did they themselves not bother to read these articles, but some scholars (ulema) went so far as to proclaim that nobody should read them. Today in our movement, too, a section has risen [Note: i.e., the Qadianis], which out of arrogance is not prepared to listen to some issues, and even take books and tear them up. So, my advice for you is to keep your heart ever open to any truth, justice and wisdom, and be prepared to think deeply on it. If what is said is just and logical, then accept it, and if it is wrong, leave it. My faith is that such a person, even if he makes a mistake, will not be caught.

7. What is: "The Curse (la’nat) of God?"

"The curse of God be on the rejectors" [Holy Quran, 3:61]. The curse of God is: a heart moved far away from God and inclining further towards this perishable world. "And when there came to them a Book from Allah verifying that which they have, and aforetime they used to pray for victory against those who disbelieved – but when there came to them that which they recognized, they disbelieved in it; so Allah’s curse is on the disbelievers" – [Quran, 2:89].

8. The Verification of the Quran by the Torah:

Even if there had been no prophecy about the Holy Quran in the Torah and the Bible, the essential principles of the Quran were in such strong accordance with the earlier scripture, that any nation which valued justice would find it impossible to deny its holy teachings. There is not a single teaching about righteousness, which has not been presented by the Holy Quran. Let anybody bring forth any such good teaching. He will find it exists in the Quran. As the Quran possesses all these virtues, rejection of it can only be ascribed to turning away from truth and an evil inclination towards falsehood. The verse quoted above (Quran, 2:89), not only states that the Quran is a revealed book from God, but furthermore that there are prophecies regarding this in your sacred scripture. So, the Torah states, that when the Isrealites called out "O God, may it not be that we do not hear your voice again," they were answered, "I will raise a prophet like you from among their brothers, I will put my words in his mouth, those who deny him I will punish." (Deuteronomy 18:18). Now observe, has their been any prophet, from Moses (peace be upon him) to Jesus (peace be upon him) who has claimed to fulfil this prophecy.

9. The Prophecy of Moses about the Holy Prophet [pbuh]:

On the one hand, there has been no one who has claimed to fulfil this prophecy, and on the other hand, it is stated in the Quran: "Surely We have sent to you a Messenger, a witness against you, as We sent a Messenger to Pharoah" (Quran 73:15). Then, with such a clear prophecy, which is so emphasized by the Prophet Moses, what reason is there to deny this prophet. Given the fact that no other prophet had ever claimed to fulfil this prophecy, is there any doubt that the Jews recognised the truth in the Holy Prophet’s claim? That is why the Quran states, "but when there came to them that which they recognised," that is, they denied in spite of their clear recognition. They saw the similarity of Prophet Muhammad [pbuh] with Prophet Moses; they also understood that the brothers of the Isrealities were the Ishmaelites, and that no prophet had appeared previously among the Ishmaelites. With all these signs, one who still denies, places himself under the curse of Allah. The Jews accepted all these signs, but only denied because the Holy Prophet [pbuh] did not belong to their nation. They desired that the Promised Prophet would come from amongst their nation.

10. The Punishment for Opposing the Truth:

"Evil is that for which they sell their souls – that they should deny that which Allah has revealed, out of envy that Allah should down of His grace on whomsoever of His servants He pleases; so they incur wrath upon wrath. And there is an abasing chastisement for the disbelievers." (Holy Quran, 2:90).

A deliberate rejection is termed as rebellion. So the Quran states, that they so followed their lower souls, and that even after knowing the Holy Prophet (pbuh) was the one prophesied, they still rejected him, and thus entered into a state of rebellion against God’s commandments and signs. And why did they rebel? Only because, against their desires, another nation received God’s grace. That is, their rebellious nature caused them to deny. As the punishment for a rebel is wrath upon wrath – so they came under this punishment.

"And there is an abasing chastisement for the disbelievers." Likewise, today, the Muslims are receiving a humbling chastisement. This is due to some similar fault to that of the Jews. It is important that the Muslims examine their condition and try to correct it. These events (in the Quran) are narrated to be taken as a lesson and guidance for the Muslims, and should not be treated as mere stories.

"We hear and disobey" (Part of the verse 2:93 of the Quran). The Jews did not actually say this, for they claim to believe in God. So, the meaning is that we heard, but in our actions we disobeyed. This is the very condition of the Muslims today. All of them believe in every single word of the Quran, but their actions are in opposition to its teachings.

11. If you are Truthful, then Desire Death:

"Say: If the abode of the Hereafter with Allah is specially for you to the exclusion of the people, then invoke death if you are truthful" - (Quran 2:94). One of the reasons nations deny the truth, is because of the false belief that arises in them that they are the only saved people. And that they are the beloved nation of God. The Jews believed that they were exalted specially by God and that hellfire was forbidden to touch them. They have been mentioned in this verse, and told that if heaven is so certain for you, then desire death so that you could quickly gain relief from the suffering of this world. However, I believe, this interpretation to be weak, as to desire death is equivalent to suicide (which is a sin).

12. The Desire for Death and the Rejection of the Christians:

The actual meaning of this verse is that if you are so beloved to God, then pray to God against me (whom you consider to be your enemy), so that you achieve success in this glorious struggle to distinguish between truth and falsehood. In short, engage in a Mubahila (i.e., religious duel or pray to God to show a sign of the righteous party). Christians object to this, saying that our religion consists of nothing but love, so how can we desire anybody’s death. However, this is nothing but an outward expression, for we see that they strive with the utmost of their power against others. Indeed Abu Amer who was a very famous priest in Medina, prophesied that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) would be destroyed. So it is stated in this verse (Quran 2:94) that if you are correct in your beliefs, which cause you to deny Islam, and believe that we are liars, then pray against us, so that the world becomes free from our influence.

And they will never invoke it on account of what their hands have sent on before. (Quran 2:95 – first part of the verse). As they know that their prayers will not be accepted, that is why they do not invoke. Furthermore, their desire for a long life and their love for their desires makes them afraid of death. In fact, they are certain of punishment, that is why they desire a life of a thousand years, but a long life will in no way remove the chastisement.
