Overview of the Services of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of
Qadian to the Faith of Islam: We extol His praise and send benedictions on His gracious Prophet. "Ai-keh khwandee hikmatay yunanian hikmate imaniyan ra hum be khwan" (O thou that has read the wisdom of the Greeks do also read the wisdom of the Believers) (Maulana Rumi). When the worldly-wise, not given to judging with a fair and judicious eye, set out to judge any prophet, messenger, appointee or mujaddid [reformer], each one, according to the dictates of his own opinion and selfish motives, carps with the same refrain that the said person has failed to do this or that. They never bother to examine what he had in fact accomplished, and never caring to observe whether what he accomplished comes up to the standard laid down by the Holy Quran or world history for judging the religious services of the appointees and messengers of God. Unless judged by these standards, one would never arrive at a correct verdict, for every individual has his own selfish desires. If the envoy of God works to meet the desires and wishes of one person, he would be judged as having gone against the wishes of another. Thus the criticism would continue as it was. As a matter of fact, when God, Most High, nominates someone to the grand post of carrying out the work of reformation and renovation, He Himself lays down the plan of action and the goal of the work, though it may be against what the people want. In this regard, the Holy Quran says: Whenever a Messenger came to you with things that your hearts did not desire, you behaved haughtily: so a party of you gave the lie and another party you slayed (HQ: 2:87). In other words, human pride and vanity can induce a man to arrogate to himself the work of determining the mission and goal of an appointee of God, thus taking over the function of God. Alternately, such usurpers would deny Gods appointee, would give him the lie and would devise plans to slay him. This is, and has always been their practice, and to this complete similarity between the behaviour of such detractors, the Quran testifies in the words: Have they been bequeathing a will to one another? (HQ: 51:53). This is a very subtle form of expression. All the opponents of Gods appointees have shown such similar ways of contradicting them as if they have been making a will about it all along, that is, telling their posterity that this is the way they should give the lie to Gods appointees. So how could there be a different way of giving the lie to Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian when he was raised to the grand post of mujaddid? Thus history repeated itself and every opponent who entered the field of criticism had only to say: "the Mirza did not do this or he did not do that." In the following pages is presented a brief survey of what Mirza Ghulam Ahmad did accomplish. The reader can judge for himself whether what he accomplished is what a mujaddid and appointee of God should have done at that particular period of history.
