Summary of Minnun-ur-Rehman:
1895

Printer-friendly Version

In 1895, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Sahib of Qadian started a new vein of research by writing a book in which he put forth the idea that Arabic is the ‘mother of all languages’ (Arabic: Umm-ul-Alsina). He claimed that the first language taught by God to man was Arabic and, as mankind spread to different corners of the earth, this common language evolved in divergent directions and gave rise to the present diversity of tongues. He named this book ‘Minan-ur-Rahman’. In addition to the above, this book also proves that Arabic alone is that perfect and comprehensive language that contains the technical terms and phraseology needed to fully describe the unity and attributes of God and the characteristics of the physical and spiritual worlds. It is for this reason that God taught this language to man so that he could properly gain knowledge of God.

During the period that Hazrat Mirza Sahib was conducting research on this book, he spent long hours discussing his findings with all educated visitors to Qadian. He also devoted much time to collecting the uncompounded words (mufradat) of Arabic and other languages. His most important helper in this work was Khawaja Kamaluddin Sahib who assisted him in collecting the uncompounded words and in discussing various aspects of this research. It is reported that Hazrat Mirza Sahib had collected more than one and a half million uncompounded words of Arabic, and the process of collection was still continuing. He had identified thousands of words of Sanskrit and English with Arabic derivation and even a cursory examination of this work was enough to convince one of its amazing scopes. Unfortunately, more pressing engagements diverted Hazrat Mirza Sahib’s attention from this work, and the original manuscript and the stock of uncompounded words has been lost. It was probably destroyed because no trace of it can be found now.

This book was published after the death of Hazrat Mirza Sahib in its unfinished form. Even the partial work that has become available through publication shows the strength of arguments adduced therein. Had this book been completed, it would certainly have revolutionised the study of linguistics. Hazrat Mirza Sahib’s disciples were grieved to see the work of their master in this incomplete form. This motivated Khawaja Kamaluddin, who was the chief assistant and the main discussion partner of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad in this research, to write a book called "Umm-ul-Alsina" (Mother of Languages) based on the principal research theme of his master. Although this latter book is not as comprehensive in its deliberation and evidence as the book conceived by Hazrat Mirza Sahib, but even so Khawaja Kamaluddin is eminently successful in proving Arabic as the mother of languages. This book is highly recommended for reading to scholars of linguistics.
