Summary of Ittaymaam-e-Hujjat:
June 1894

Printer-friendly Version

Another of Hazrat Mirza Sahib’s Arabic writings was Itaymaam-ul-Hujjat, published in June 1894. Maulvi Rusul Baba was a renowned Kashmiri scholar of Amritsar and was one of Hazrat Mirza Sahib’s leading opponents. This man wrote a pamphlet in which he emphasised that Prophet Jesus was alive in the heavens with his mortal body. In reply, Hazrat Mirza Sahib published Itaymaam-ul-Hujjat and proved the death of Jesus so clearly and rationally that left no room for argument. And since Maulvi Rusul Baba had announced a prize of Rs. 1000 [around $20, a century ago] in his booklet for the person who would establish the death of Jesus, Hazrat Mirza Sahib demanded that the Maulvi should deposit this sum of money by the end of the month with a committee composed of three notables of Amritsar, who would issue a written statement to the effect that they had received Rs. 1000 from Maulvi Rusul Baba and agreed to hand it over to Mirza Ghulam Ahmad without delay in case of his ascendancy.

Interestingly, Hazrat Mirza Sahib named Maulvi Muhammad Hussain Batalvi, one of his bitterest antagonists who also believed that Jesus was alive, as the arbiter who would read both the booklets and pass his verdict on them. Hazrat Mirza Sahib proposed that Maulvi Muhammad Hussain Batalvi should affirm in a public gathering that he had found Maulvi Rusul Baba’s writing as truly establishing the life of Jesus and that Hazrat Mirza Sahib’s booklet did not refute it. He should then pray that if he were guilty of a fabrication, Allah should smite him with leprosy or blindness or some other affliction resulting in his death within a year’s time, and all the people present should loudly say ‘amen’ thrice at the end of his prayer. Hazrat Mirza Sahib declared that if Maulvi Muhammad Hussain Batalvi remained alive and well for a year after taking this oath, the chosen committee would honourably return Maulvi Rusul Baba’s money to him and Hazrat Mirza Sahib would publicly admit that Maulvi Rusul Baba had indeed proven the life of Jesus. If, however, Maulvi Rusul Baba failed to deposit the promised sum of money within two weeks after the publishing of this booklet, it would be considered as proof of his deceit and lying. He should be thereafter be shunned by all and Allah’s protection be sought against the influence of such deceitful persons as he.

Hazrat Mirza Sahib also wrote that when the slander and vilification of all the maulvis had come to naught, they started cursing him, and when the curses failed also, they began to incite the government against him. In short, every attempt had been made to overthrow him; they did not realise that he was the bearer of Divine light, which was not put out by such tactics.

Maulvi Rusul Baba did not have the courage to respond to Hazrat Mirza Sahib’s challenge and maintained complete silence regarding his offer of Rs. 1000. He did not, however, refrain from abusing Hazrat Mirza Sahib and persecuting the Ahmadis in Amritsar. When the Plague broke out in the Punjab [a province of India], some of his foolish devotees starting boasting that he was immune to the epidemic and this was a sign of his truthfulness. Finally, Maulvi Rusul Baba was stricken by the plague and died of it in Amritsar on 8th December 1903.
