Our Motto : 'In-Allah-ha-Ma'anaa' ("Be not grieved, for surely Allah is with us." - The Holy Quran 9:40). We find spiritual strength, courage and comfort, in the times of trials and hardships, from this Divine Quranic revelation that descended upon the pure heart of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), so as to console and compose him during one of the most perilous moments of his life. <Please click the 'Our Motto' link on our homepage for more details>

Summary of Baraheen-i-Ahmadiyya:
Vols. 1 to 4, 1880-1884

Printer-friendly Version

Published in four volumes, from 1880 to 1884 C.E., Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad’s first book was written at a time when Islam faced a vicious assault from all sides — the Christian missionaries and the Arya Samajists were conducting a malevolent propaganda of maligning Islam and the Founder of Islam; influenced by modern materialism and atheism the Brahmu Samajists and even some educated Muslims (led by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan) had made a dangerous attack on religion itself by denying the existence of revelation from God — while the Muslim leaders were completely heedless of the plight of their faith and spent their time squabbling over petty issues and labelling each other as heretics. Hazrat Mirza Sahib possessed a great sense of honour for Islam and he was deeply perturbed at the critical state of his faith. At first he conducted a jihad against the ignoble assailants of Islam by forcefully refuting their allegations in the articles which he wrote for newspapers. But, finally, he no longer considered that effort to be sufficient to uphold the honour of Islam and he determined to wage a decisive battle against the foes of his religion by writing a comprehensive book, in which he would refute the beliefs of all the other religions, compile all the allegations they had made against Islam, reply to them in an extremely rational and authoritative manner, and also record the Divine signs and Heavenly proofs whose manifestation had confirmed the truth of Islam.

Thus, in Baraheen-i-Ahmadiyya, Hazrat Mirza Sahib put forward 300 powerful and logical arguments from the Holy Quran to prove the truth of Islam. And such was his faith in the strength of these arguments that he announced a sum of Rs. 10,000 (the value of all his property at that time) for the person who would refute them. This challenge was put to the adherents of all religions of the world but, despite the enormous prize offered, not a single person has ever had the nerve to come forward to accept it. In this respect, this book is matchless to this day.

The book was widely acclaimed by the Muslims of that time as a tremendous success for Islam in that critical period. One such glowing testimonial that was penned by Maulvi Muhammad Hussain Batalvi (the leader of the Ahl-e-Hadith in India, who later became one of Hazrat Mirza Sahib’s bitterest opponents) while reviewing the book is quoted here :

"In our opinion, this book in this age, and to meet the present circumstances, is such that the like of it has not been written up to this time in Islam … its author, too, has proved himself to be firmly staunch in helping the cause of Islam with his money, with his pen and his tongue, and with his personal religious experiences. And he has done this (service) to such an extent that the example of it is rarely met with among the Muslims who have gone before. If anyone considers these words of ours to be Asiatic exaggeration, let him point out at least one such book as has in it such forceful refutation of all classes of the opponents of Islam, especially the Arya Samaj, and let him give us the particulars of two or three persons as the helpers of the cause of Islam who, besides serving Islam with their money and their personal efforts and their pens and their tongues, have also come forward with their religious experiences and have proclaimed, as against the opponents of Islam and the deniers of revelation, that manly challenge that whoever doubted the truth of revelation might come to them and witness the same" (Ishaat-us-Sunnah, Vol. 7, June-November 1884).

Could there be greater praise for Baraheen-i-Ahmadiyya and the services to Islam and spiritual attainments of its author than the above? Let it be noted from this review that Hazrat Mirza Sahib had, by that time, laid claim to being the recipient of Divine revelation, yet no exception was taken to it by Maulvi Muhammad Hussain Batalvi or any other religious leader of Islam.
