Summary of Asmani Faisila:
December 1891


It was Hazrat Mirza Sahib’s practice to invite his opponents to carry out public discussions against him, regarding his claims. In this connection, he had also invited one Maulvi Syed Nazeer Hussain of Delhi, who was considered to be one of the foremost religious scholars of the Muslims at that time, to come forward for a debate against him. Since Maulvi Nazeer Hussain lacked the assurance to face Hazrat Mirza Sahib, he made the pretext that Mirza Sahib should prove himself to be a Muslim and a true believer before calling him to a debate. Now Hazrat Mirza Sahib had repeatedly recited the kalima ["There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah" (La ilaha ill-Allah, Muhammad-ur rasul-ullah)] and professed his belief in Islam, he had publicly proclaimed his complete faith in Islam and even issued a written statement to the effect in the Central Mosque in Delhi*, yet his opponents persisted in calling him a kafir. Finally in December 1891 he published a book entitled ‘Faisla-i-Aasmani’ (‘The Verdict by Heaven’).

* 'The other charges made against me that I do not believe in Lailat-ul-Qadr or miracles or the Mi'raj (Ascension of the Holy Prophet), and that I claim prophethood for myself, and that I disbelieve in the finality of prophethood in the Holy Prophet, these are all false charges and pure falsehood. In all these matters my faith is the same as that of other Ahle-Sunnat wal Jamaat believers. And the charges drawn from my books Tauzih-e-Maram and Izala-e-Auham are absolute mistakes on the part of the fault-finders. Now I honestly profess before the Muslims in the sanctity of this mosque, the House of God, that I believe in the finality of prophethood in the Last of the Prophets (may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and that I consider a man who disbelieves in the finality of prophethood (in the Holy Prophet Muhammad) to be irreligious and outside the pale of Islam. Similarly, I believe in the angels, miracles, Lailat-ul-Qadr, etc.' (Din-ul-Haq, page 29).

In this book Hazrat Mirza Sahib once again invited Maulvi Nazeer Hussain to carry out a written debate with him. The reason for singling out Maulvi Nazeer Hussain was that he was considered to be the topmost scholar among the Muslims and could thus be taken to represent them all. Concerning his faith, Hazrat Mirza Sahib wrote in this book that since the Maulvis had given no weight to his repeated avowal that he was a true Muslim -- despite the fact that they were bound to accept such a declaration as a matter of principle according to the Shariah -- he was being forced to make the real state of his faith manifest by calling upon Maulvi Nazeer Hussain and other scholars to contest against him regarding the characteristics of a perfect believer (momin-i-kaamil) as laid down in the Holy Quran and Tradition [Hadith]. The following four qualifications of a perfect believer were quoted by Hazrat Mirza Sahib in this book:

Firstly, a perfect believer is often Blessed by God with the good news (mubasharaat) of certain desirable events to occur in the future.

Secondly, some hidden truths, relating not only to his/her own person or connections or to certain well-known personalities but also of future happenings in the world at large, are revealed beforehand to the perfectly true believer.

Thirdly, most of the prayers and supplications of such a believer are accepted by God and he is also informed of their acceptance beforehand.

Fourthly, he is Blessed with the greatest knowledge about the intricacies and wonders of the Holy Quran.

Hazrat Mirza Sahib has, in this book, elaborated on these four qualities of a perfect believer and invited all scholars and religious and spiritual leaders of the Muslims to contest against him regarding these characters. He was thus ready to put his faith to the ultimate test, but first he called upon those who cast aspersions on him to prove the calibre of their own faith according to the criterion laid down by the Holy Quran and Tradition. Alas, as with all of Hazrat Mirza Sahib’s forceful challenges, not a single person had the nerve to come forward in acceptance. Thus, those who had questioned Hazrat Mirza Sahib’s faith were found to be lacking themselves when it came to the real test.
