Explanation of Dhul Qarnain’s Travels:
by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Sahib of Qadian
Malfuzat, vol. 10, pp. 71-72 Translation by Imam Kalamazad Mohammed

Once I was perusing chapter 18 of the Holy Qur’an entitled The Cave, in which Dhul Qarnain is mentioned. When, however, I gave deeper consideration to this story, it dawned upon me that in this narrative there was a definite reference to the condition of this present age. It is written that when he made his first journey, which was to the West, Dhul Qarnain came to such a place where it appeared that the sun had set in a black pool of mud. After this he made another journey, this time to the East, where he came upon a people who were under the fierce heat of the sun and without any means of shade or protection from it. He then made a third journey and found a people who informed him of the ravages of Gog and Magog and begged him for protection against them.

Allah, Most High, has given us here a description in the form of a parable. Nevertheless, the name Dhul Qarnain can be applied to the one who finds two centuries and I have ushered in both centuries to such an extent that there is no room for objection. Indeed I share part of both centuries (that is, both the Christian and the Islamic centuries), and if you make the necessary calculations, you will find this to be so.

Now, those narratives that are found in the Holy Qur’an are not mere stories and tales for amusement. In fact, they contain within them momentous prophecies and if a person considers them to be mere stories then he is not a true Muslim. In short, from this computation I have to be considered as Dhul Qarnain also. Indeed according to one of the Imams of our religion, Dhul Qarnain means Messiah.

Now Allah, Most High, has made reference to both the Western and Eastern peoples in this story. The reference concerning the Western nations is to those people who were given the sweet clear water of the Injil (Gospel) and other religious books but they corrupted these illuminating teachings and so they were left with only dirt and filth. As regards the Eastern peoples, the reference is to those Muslim nations which have not come under the shade of the Imam of the Age and so are being scorched by the cruel rays of the sun. But my jamaat is especially fortunate and should render profuse thanks to Allah for having blessed them with guidance. However, this condition is still in its infancy.
