Is the
(Anti-Ahmadiyya) Imam Right or Wrong?:
by Soner
Uguz

In the name of Allah, Most
Compassionate, Most Merciful!
Praise, glory, greatness and honour be
to Allah, the One and only True Living and Eternal God Who
is the Lord and Creator of the Universe. Peace and blessings
be upon the Holy Prophet, the prophet of mercy and grace,
the beloved of God, the last of all prophets after whom no
prophet shall ever come. He is Muhammad Mustafa, the
seal of prophethood, the son of Abdullah and Amina and the
grandson of Abdul Muttalib of the tribe of Quraish and of
the clan of Hashim. Peace also unto his family and
Companions who strove with him in support and true
allegiance to spread the good news that is true salvation
and that is Islam, the only true religion. May Allah also
bless the Promised Messiah and Mahdi, the Reformer of
the fourteenth century Hijrah, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam
Ahmad. Ameen.
I am writing this article to refute
the assumptions of an anti-Ahmadiyya Imam who made a website
a few years back but only a few weeks ago I had found it
when searching through Yahoo. I joined this Movement a while
ago and I did not just say, "Hes right; let me join
immediately." No, I did not do it this way. First I studied
the Movement by the help of the brothers and sisters at the
Lahore Ahmadiyya websites and I requested information from
them because I had already read most of the literature on
their website. They sent me books and I studied them over
and over again and I did my own research. In short, I
studied fully and carefully before I joined the Ahmadiyya
Movement and I know for a fact that this Movement is surely
right. I already knew about some of the allegations, which I
had read in booklets which refuted Qadiani beliefs and
stated that Ahmadi beliefs were the same, but I discovered
this to be false by reading from the Lahore Ahmadiyya
websites and the books they had sent me and are still
sending me. By the grace of Allah and I am studying these
books thoroughly and have seen that these allegations are
false. In this article I propose to answer some of those
allegations levelled against the Holy Movement. It begins
thus:
"Qadianism (Ahmadiyyat) in
the News
Qadiani/Ahmadi Cult has been crushed on the Internet
July 15, 1999
Has removed its Official Propaganda Sites
Has ordered its followers not to communicate with
knowledgeable Muslims
All Praise is due to Allah
(swt) that after just two years of operation, the
irrefutable evidence provided on our website on the
absolute finality of prophethood and the deceptive
arguments and methods of the Qadiani leadership have
forced the Ahmadiyya Mission to shut down all of their
official internet sites. Previously, the Qadiani leaders
had been boasting about the arguments they had presented
on their websites to convert unsuspecting individuals to
Qadianism. However, their falsehood was exposed by the
light of Truth and the evidence presented on our website.
The Head of the Mission was forced to order the removal
of all of their literature after we produced the account
of several high-level Ahmadis who had verified the facts,
testified to the falsehood of the Mission and embraced
Islam. And say: Truth has (now) arrived, and falsehood
perished: for falsehood is (by its nature) bound to
perish (17:81). "
My
Answer:
The assumptions stated here are all
stated by a charlatan who is a liar for he states that all
the official websites have been shut down and I ask him to
name these sites for I know a lot of good websites which
defend the Holy Movement. Maybe he has succeeded in having a
few Qadiani (now Rawbah Jamaat) sites closed but he
has not succeeded in closing the websites by the Ahmadiyyah
Anjuman Ishaat Islam, Lahore. All his allegations are
false and are simply answered on the great website,
aaiil.info.
The Imam asserts that we have falsehood. Let me reassure him
that we -- Ahmadis -- have no falsehood in our teachings for
all our teachings are Islamic and are based on the concepts
of Ahle Sunnah wat Jammat. Maybe it is true
that Qadianis use deceptive methods to make people join
their Movement but not so [Lahori] Ahmadis, for we
base all our proof on the Holy Quran and Sunnah. The
Imam persists in referring to Ahmadis also as infidels and
heretics and I say that these words are fit only for those
who have said it. The website made by this Imam is full of
bigotry and deception, which he uses to trick people and to
ignite in them hate and prejudice and to give up all sense
of respect and tolerance. This goes to show that this imam
lacks good moral qualities so how can we trust him and his
comrades who assist in making similar sites? But Allah is
our Protector against such plots of bias, ignorance and
sheer pride which can lead to sedition. May Allah have mercy
on this imam.
We in the Ahmadiyyah Movement believe
that Muhammad is the last of all prophets and that Hazrat
Mirza Ghulam Ahmad never claimed prophethood but only to be
a reformer (muhaddith). Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad did
not innovate or abrogate or omit anything in the religion.
He was a Muslim and we are also. We believe in all that the
Holy Quran and the Sunnah state and we have the
utmost respect for the scholars of fiqh
(jurisprudence). The persons he claims to have left the
Movement and joined Islam are persons who used to be
Qadianis. But his statement tries to show that Ahmadis are
not Muslims and thus charges us as non-Muslims; this
allegation fits his own character only.
"The discussion forum we
established in February 1999 was also an instant success
and attracted participants around the globe. On this
forum, Qadiani missionaries were defeated hands down and
their century-old arguments were proven to have been
based on conjecture, fabricated evidence and false
claims. As a result of this forum, several Ahmadis were
guided to Islam and the leader of the Qadiani movement
was once again forced to ban his followers from
discussing their faith and history with knowledgeable
Muslims. Obviously, if the Qadiani leaders had the Truth
on their side, they would be eager to share it with
others, rather than hide it! Once again, the Word of
Allah (swt) has been proven against the Ahmadi
Mission. Nay, we hurl the Truth against falsehood and
it knocks out its brain, and behold, falsehood does
perish! Ah! Woe be to you for the (false) things you
ascribe (to Us) (21.18)."
My
Answer:
All his statements of accusations
levelled against this Movement are sheer lies. This imam is
nothing but a charlatan who gathered others who possess his
likeness, and his statements and so-called answers against
the Movement are all futile. A close study shows this to be
true. Let him take heed from the ayahs he himself
conveys for it is obvious he does not know what he is
talking about. And I would like to say that the Qadianis are
the ones who broke off from the true teachings of the
Promised Messiah in. We in the Ahmadiyyah Movement are
Muslims. Ashadu ala ilaha illallah wa ashadu anna
Muhammad-ur rasululla. This is what we bear witness to.
His statement that the world is against us is a sheer lie
and fantasy which he tries to project as the truth. May
Allah give this imam a rational mind.
Ameen.
"We like to advise our Muslim
brothers and sisters to be on guard about the deceptive
ways of the Qadiani missionaries. They are now
concentrating their effort on individuals who may not be
aware that the founder of Qadianism, while claiming to be
the Mahdi, Messiah, Hindu Lord Krishna, a second
advent of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and a new prophet, had
attempted to subjugate Muslims to the oppressive British
colonial rule. The Qadiani missionaries will often
present selected portions of the writings of their
founder to suggest they hold the same view of Islam as
Muslims do, but they omit those writings and claims of
their leaders which have placed them outside the fold of
Islam. If you are aware of anyone who has been misguided
by the Ahmadi propaganda, please refer them to our
Idara immediately.
"Alhamdulillah, every day
more and more Ahmadis are realising that the objection of
the Muslim ummah against Ahmadiyyat is due to the
falsehood of the Qadiani Mission. It is not directed at
them individually. We invite every Ahmadi to reflect,
with a clear mind and receptive heart, upon the evidence
and strive to save themselves and their loved ones from a
mission which had relied on deception to misguide the
former generation of Ahmadis from the path of truth and
salvation."
My
Answer:
In this part of his assumption we see
that surely this imam is a total liar and a fanatic. I will
answer his allegations in the very words of the Promised
Messiah regarding belief in khatam
an-nabiyyin.
Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad and members
of the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha`at Islam Lahore believe that
the Holy Prophet Muhammad, may peace and the blessings of
God be upon him, is the khatam an-nabiyyin. Hazrat
Mirza wrote as follows:
"I believe that the Holy
Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is the khatam
(seal) of the Prophets" (Ainah Kamalat Islam, p.
21).
"I believe in the Holy Prophet
Muhammad, peace be upon him, being the khatam
an-nabiyyin, and I know with perfect certainty and I
firmly believe that our Holy Prophet is the khatam
al-anbiya" (Nishan Asmani, p. 28).
"I hold that our Messenger Muhammad
Mustafa, peace be upon him, is the most excellent
of messengers and the khatam an-nabiyyin"
(Hamamat al-Bushra, p. 8; new edition p.
36).
"I believe in God and His
Messenger, and I also believe that the Holy Prophet,
peace be upon him, is the khatam an-nabiyyin"
(ibid. p. 81; new edition p. 290).
"My belief is that our Leader and
Master Hazrat Muhammad, peace be upon him, is the
khatam al-anbiya" (Kitab al-Barriyya, p.
182, footnote).
"We believe that there is none
worthy of worship except Allah Almighty, and our leader
Muhammad Mustafa, peace be upon him, is His
Messenger and the khatam al-anbiya" (Ayyam
as-Sulh, pp. 86-87).
"As for belief, what God wants from
you is that God is One, and Muhammad, peace be upon him,
is His Prophet and the khatam al-anbiya and the
greatest" (Kishti-i Nuh, p. 15).
"The finality of prophethood with
the Holy Prophet is not only due to his being the last in
time, but also because all the accomplishments of
prophethood were completed with him" (Lecture on Islam
at Sialkot, p. 6).
"The age of the prophethood of the
Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, extends till the Day of
Judgement, and he is the khatam al-anbiya"
(Chashma-i Ma`rifat, p. 82).
"I have written again and again
that it is a real and actual fact that our leader and
master, peace be upon him, is the Khatam
al-anbiya" (ibid. p. 324, footnote).
"I swear by Almighty God that I am
not a kafir [non-believer]. My belief is:
There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the
Messenger of Allah. And regarding the Holy Prophet, I
believe (the verse of the Quran): He is the Messenger
of Allah and the khatam an-nabiyyin. I swear to the
truth of this statement of mine as many times as there
are holy names of God, and as many times as there are
letters in the Holy Quran, and as many times as there are
virtues of the Holy Prophet in the sight of God. None of
my beliefs is opposed to the commands of God and the
Apostle" (Karamat as-Sadiqeen, p. 25).
"The interpretation I have given to
the descent of the Messiah is not a new one. In fact, it
is the same interpretation that Jesus himself expounded
(when explaining the descent of Elijah as the coming of
John the Baptist), because the case of the descent of
Jesus is exactly analogous to the case of the descent of
Prophet Elijah" (Kitab al-Barriyya, p.
195).
"Raising me at the head of the
fourteenth century, God disclosed the logic behind this
prophecy and made it clear that the second coming of the
Messiah to this world was destined to have been in the
same sense and manner as the second coming of the prophet
Elijah, which had been prophesied in the book of Malachi
(in the Old Testament). This book explicitly mentioned
that the Promised Messiah awaited by the Jews would not
come into the world until the Prophet Elijah had
returned. If our opponents had any element of goodness or
truth-seeking in them, they would have benefited much by
this prophecy of Malachi, upon which both the Jews and
the Christians agree. As the re-appearance of the prophet
Elijah in person in this world was a pre-requisite to the
coming of the Messiah, under this condition Jesus would
not be proved to be a true prophet. He can only be proved
to be true if some other interpretation is given to the
return of the prophet Elijah. In other words, by the
second coming of Elijah it should be taken to mean the
arising of someone like him, and that like
was John the Baptist, the son of Zacharias. This was the
interpretation given by Jesus when challenged by the
Jews. This interpretation, which is proved to have come
from a prophet's lips, shows plainly that the second
coming of the Messiah to this world is on the same lines
as the return of Elijah. To ignore a precedent that has
been established and to adopt the literal meaning,
leading to many inconsistencies in one's beliefs, is the
work of people who have very little sense and
understanding. Metaphors and allegories predominate in
prophecies, and there would be no stupidity greater than
taking a word in a prophecy literally when such literal
interpretation leads to many contradictions. It was this
attitude for which the Jews met their destruction" (ibid,
p. 194).
"God has repeatedly favoured me
with His exclusive word, saying that He has sent me in
the likeness, and with the qualities, of Jesus in order
to remove the Jewishness (i.e., Pharisaic attitude and
behaviour of Muslims of the latter days). Hence, I am the
promised son of Mary in a metaphorical sense, who had
been promised to appear at a time of
Jewishness and supremacy of Christianity. I
have come devoid of material means, with spiritual power
and weaponry, as opposed to the wrong conception of
physical warfare that prevailed among the Muslims about
(the second coming of) Jesus. My war is spiritual and my
kingdom is not of this world. I have nothing to do with
the battles and offensives of the world. My life is one
of humility and meekness, like that of Jesus. I have come
to re-establish humility, meekness, righteousness,
civility, and inner purity in the Muslims, and to teach
the path of high morals. If Muslims do not accept me, I
shall not be grieved at all because before me the
Israelites did not accept Jesus" (Majmu`a
Ishtiharat, vol. I, pp. 232-233).
"Why should one turn one's face
away from the unanimously acknowledged belief of all the
prophets, that sometimes God's prophecies are fulfilled
literally and sometimes in a metaphorical sense?"
(Supplement to Barahin Ahmadiyya, Part V, p.
93).
"When God, having seen the
condition of the present age and finding the earth filled
with sin, impiety and misguidance, appointed me for the
propagation of the truth and reformation, it was also
such an age that
the people of the world, having
finished the thirteenth century Hijrah, had
reached the head of the fourteenth century. In obedience
to this command I began to announce to the ordinary
public, through printed posters and speeches, that the
man who was to come from God at the head of this century
for the revival of the religion was myself, so that faith
which had disappeared from the earth, I should
re-establish, and, having obtained strength from God, I
should draw the world by the power of His Hand towards
reform, piety and righteousness, and correct errors in
belief and weaknesses in deeds. Then, after a few years
had passed, it was disclosed to me clearly by Divine
revelation that the Messiah who had been promised to the
Muslim nation from the beginning, and the last Mahdi
who was to be guided by God directly at a time of the
decline of Islam and the spread of evil, the good news of
whose advent was given thirteen centuries ago by the Holy
Prophet Muhammad, was myself. The Divine communications
and revelations about this matter came with such clarity
and persistence that there remained no room for doubt"
(Tazkira Shahadatain, p. 1).
"With great respect and humility I
send this notice to Muslim ulama, Christian
divines and Hindu pundits, informing them that I have
been sent into the world to remedy and correct weaknesses
and errors of morals, doctrines and faith. I follow the
same lines as Jesus. On account of this I am called the
Promised Messiah, for I have been commanded to spread the
truth in the world by means of supernatural signs and
holy teachings" (Majmu`a Ishtiharat, vol. iii, p.
342).
"The case of the second coming has
already been decided in the court of Jesus, and the
verdict has been pronounced in our favour. Jesus rejected
the belief of the Jews that the prophet Elijah would
re-appear in the world, declaring the prophecy to be
metaphorical, and considered John the Baptist to be the
fulfiller of the prophecy. Look how clearly this verdict
of Jesus resolves the issue in contention. Tell us, if
two parties have a dispute on an issue, and one of them
puts forward the decision of a prophet as a precedent
while the other party is unable to give a precedent,
which of the two is more worthy of being believed?
(Tuhfa Golarwiya, p. 6).
Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad always
denied the allegation levelled against him that he claimed
to be a prophet (nabi). Had he indeed been a claimant
to prophethood (nubuwwat), he could not have made
denials such as those quoted below.
"There is no claim of
prophethood; on the contrary, the claim is of sainthood
(muhaddasiyyat) which has been advanced by the
command of God" (Izala Auham, p. 421).
"In conclusion, there is no claim
of prophethood on my part either. The claim is only of
being a saint (wali) and a reformer
(mujaddid)" (Majmu`a Ishtiharat, vol. ii,
p. 298).
"By way of a fabrication, they
slander me by saying that I have made a claim to
prophethood. But it should be remembered that all this is
a fabrication. Our belief is that our master and leader,
Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa, peace and the blessings
of God be upon him, is the last of the Prophets. We
believe in angels, miracles, and all the doctrines held
by the Ahl-e Sunnah" (Kitab al-Barriyya,
footnote, p. 182).
"In confronting the present
ulama, this humble one has sworn many times by God
that I am not a claimant to any prophethood. But these
people still do not desist from declaring me as kafir
(Letter to Maulavi Ahmad-ullah of Amritsar, 27
January 1904).
If Hazrat Mirza had indeed claimed to
be a prophet, he could not have written that he was a
recipient of "the revelation of saints" (wahy
wilayat) or (wahy muhaddasiyyat). This, however,
was exactly what he wrote:
"Has it ever happened in the
world that God should have so helped an impostor that he
could be speaking a lie against God for eleven years, to
the effect that His wahy wilayat and wahy
muhaddasiyyat (revelation as granted to saints) comes
to him, and God would not cut off his jugular vein?
(Ainah Kamalat Islam, p. 323).
"I have noticed that at the time of
revelation, which descends on me in the form of wahy
wilayat, I feel myself in the hands of an extremely
strong external force" (Barakat-ud-Dua, p.
21).
If Hazrat Mirza had indeed claimed to
be a prophet, he would not have called himself a
follower and a prophet or a follower from one
aspect and a prophet from another, because these two
aspects are combined only in a muhaddas (Muslim
saint), a prophet only having the aspect of prophethood. He
wrote:
"So the fact that he (the
Messiah to come) has been called a follower (of the Holy
Prophet Muhammad) as well as a prophet indicates that the
qualities of both discipleship and prophethood will be
found in him, as it is essential for both of these to be
found in a muhaddas. The possessor of full
prophethood, however, has only the quality of
prophethood. To conclude, sainthood
(muhaddasiyyat) is coloured with both colours. For
this reason, in (the Divine revelations published in)
Barahin Ahmadiyya, God named this humble one as
follower and as prophet" (Izala Auham, p.
533).
"I cannot be called only
prophet, but a prophet from one aspect and a
follower from another" (Haqiqat al-Wahy, footnote,
p.150).
"There is no need now to follow
each prophet or Book separately that came before the Holy
Quran because the prophethood of Muhammad comprises and
comprehends them all. All truths that take man to God are
to be found in it, no new truth shall come after it, nor
is there any previous truth that is not in it. Hence,
upon this prophethood (of Muhammad) ends all
prophethood. Rendering obedience to this prophethood
takes one to God very easily, and one receives the gift
of God's love and His revelation in a much greater
measure than people used to before (the time of the Holy
Prophet Muhammad). However, its perfect follower cannot
be called just a prophet because it would be
derogatory to the perfect and complete prophethood of the
Holy Prophet Muhammad. But both the words ummati
(follower of the Holy Prophet) and nabi (prophet)
can jointly be applied to him, because that would not be
derogatory to the prophethood of the Holy Prophet
Muhammad" (Al-Wasiyyat, pp. 27-28).
"Islam is the only religion in the
world having the virtue that, provided the truest and
fullest obedience is rendered to our leader and master,
the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and the blessings of God
be upon him, one can have the privilege of Divine
revelation. For this reason it is recorded in the
hadith, 'Ulama ummati ka-anbiya Bani
Israil', that is, the spiritual savants from
among my followers are like the prophets of Israel.
In this saying, too, the godly savants are on the one
hand called followers, and on the other hand they are
called the likes of prophets" (Supplement to Barahin
Ahmadiyya, Part V, pp. 182-184).
So take heed and beware of slandering
this great man. You should know who he is. Below is an
account of his life which he himself had written.
Brief Account of
the Life of the Promised Messiah:
"I was born of a
distinguished family of chiefs and rulers. One of my
ancestors, I am told, migrated to this country from
Samarkand. The king of the time made him a chief and
placed him in command of a force. Later on, when the
Sikhs rose to power and overran the country and oppressed
the people, they wrested from my family, along with
others, all their territories, and imprisoned its members
and forced them to flee from their capital. It was winter
and the cold was biting. They had to leave the town by
night shivering with cold and overcome with grief. They
sojourned in the territory of another chief, who treated
them with a degree of kindness and showed unsolicited
sympathy towards them and in consideration of their sad
plight granted them an allowance for their maintenance.
This was however very inadequate for their needs.
"Then with the advent of the
British power and the passing away of the devilish regime
and the restoration of peace my ancestors returned to
their homes with the friends of their exile, and offered
thanks to God. Some of the villages that were formerly
under their rule were now restored to them with their
other possessions and departed fortune once more returned
to the family. They had a twofold reason for
gratification. Firstly, they were restored to peace, and
secondly, they came to enjoy religious freedom. Little,
however, of these ancestral possessions actually came
down to me and after the death of my father, I became a
veritable derelict. There was indeed a time when, except
for a few people of my own village, nobody knew me, and
of those who lived in the surroundings villages only a
few knew me by sight. My condition was that when I
returned home from a journey nobody cared to enquire
where I had stayed.
"This unimportance and want of fame
were dear to me for I had a natural aversion to fame,
honour and wealth and preferred a life of seclusion and
felt weary and suffered in mind when visitors came to see
me. My father had despaired of me and thought that I was
like a stranger in the family, the guest of a night who
merely shared their table. He was of the opinion that as
I loved solitude I could not possibly manage a big house
or have dealings with people. In consequence, he often
scolded me and expressed himself in harsh and bitter
words. He counselled me in public and in private to
strive to better my worldly fortune, holding up before me
pictures of worldly comfort. But on the other hand, my
mind felt more and more inclined towards God. My brother
also, who bore the mind of my father, dealt with me in a
like manner. Now, God took them both away before long,
because, as He told me, He wished that there should be
none left to chide me or tune his rebuke to hurt me. Then
my Lord gradually drew me towards honour and election. I
had no knowledge that He would elect me to be the
Promised Messiah or fulfil His promise through me. Indeed
I preferred to be left in the corner of solitude, because
I found all my pleasure in seclusion and want of renown.
I coveted neither worldly nor religious fame and yearned
to lead the life of a common mortal. It was the explicit
command of God that at last overpowered me and brought me
to public notice and compelled me to deliver my message
to mankind. He is the Sovereign Lord and to Him it
belongs to command whatever He wills.
I have a Friend and I am filled
with His Love,
And I have an aversion to all rank and
dignity.
I see that the world and its
votaries are stricken with famine,
But that the land of my love never suffers from
want.
Men incline towards worldly
pleasures while I
Incline towards the Face that gives delight and
thrill.
I am attached to the shinning skirt
of my Beloved
So much so that what was dull and dark has been
illuminated in me.
My foes have been turned into the
swine of the wilderness,
And their women have been converted into worse than
curs.
They abuse me and I know not why
they abuse me.
Should I prove false to my Friend or turn my back to
Him!
I have sworn that I will not part
from Him,
Even though the lions or the wolves should tear my
body.
The kingdom of men depart with
their death,
But the Kingdom of my Love forever stays.
"Thus I had withdrawn myself from
men, and having detached myself from all earthly love or
hate, consecrated myself wholly to God. For, while I was
still young, I had come to realise that God had created
me for a higher purpose. My mind yearned after spiritual
advancement and communication with God. The jewel of my
nature sparkled even on the surface and wanted not the
miner to dig to discover it.
"My father felt sad on my account
and my indifference to and want of interest in worldly
matters troubled him and filled him with anxiety. It was
his constant wish to see me rise in fortune and to regain
the power and prestige of my forefathers. He wanted that
I should achieve the highest worldly eminence. But God
had designed other eminence for me. And it came to pass
as God had wished. He vouchsafed to me a light in the
gloom of a long dark night, and illumined my mind in
order to illumine nations and peoples. He was gracious to
me and made me the Messiah regarding whom He had given a
promise of old. He helped me in diverse ways and
manifested His signs. He displayed in the heavens the
signs of the eclipse of the sun and the moon, in order to
prove the truth of my claim and to save it from
imputation of being an idle myth. When I announced my
claim of being the Promised Messiah, the people of my
country looked upon me with extreme disfavour. They
called me a heretic and rejected me and would have killed
me had not the fear of the rulers restrained their hands.
They argued that the Promised Messiah would descend from
the sky as it was written in the ancient books, and
decided by the consensus of theologians. They stuck to
that opinion and when I spoke to them they would not
listen to me, and when I tried to explain things to them,
they would not understand. I have, therefore, resolved to
carry my message to other people so as to make them
witnesses against these people, and thus have a double
condemnation against my adversaries. And my help is with
the Lord, the Best Master and the Best
Helper."
So the answer to the question "Is the
Imam right or wrong?" is that the Imam is wrong and he
should read what is written above carefully and beware of
slander.
Peace be with you.
